Twice Grand Slam winner Amelie Mauresmo has put an end to her season and is considering retirement, the Frenchwoman said on Thursday.
“Since I came back from the U.S. Open, I have been trying to practice but I did not find the desire to get back to competition,” said the world number 20 on her website (www.ameliemauresmo.fr).
“I do not want to rush things,” said former world number one, “I still give myself some time before making a decision regarding the remainder of my career.”
Mauresmo, 30, topped the WTA rankings in September 2004, and clinched her two Grand Slam titles in 2006 when she won the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
She has collected 25 WTA singles titles since turning professional in 1993.
Mauresmo has not played competitive tennis since losing to Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak in the second round of the U.S. Open. -

After upsetting world No. 1 Dinara Safina, Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai didn’t continue her top form as she crashed out of the US$4.5 million China Open WTA tournament on Thursday.

Marion Bartoli of France, seeded 14th, spent one and half an hour to defeat the 20-year-old Chinese rising star 6-1, 6-4 in the third round.Zhang started poorly in the opening set while losing all her serve games. She also made four break opportunities but too many unforced errors failed her efforts.
Bartoli accomplished another break in the seventh game, winning the first set 6-1.
In the second set, Bartoli continued her stable performance by powering three aces.
The 14th seed broke in the fourth game to take the lead 3-1, though Zhang fought back to 3-3 after saving several break points in the sixth game.
In the tenth game, Zhang failed to get point due to Bartoli’s fierce base line attack and the 25-year-old French broke again to win the second set 6-4. -

Top seed and 2005 champion Rafael Nadal survived a tricky encounter against unseeded American James Blake 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3 in a heavyweight second round clash at the China Open ATP tournament on Thursday.
Coming up next for Nadal in the last eight will be wild card Marat Safin from Russia, a 6-3, 6-4 victor over seventh seed Chilean Fernando Gonzalez.

Nadal, who served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set, managed to save eight of 11 break points he faced and won 65 percent of service points.
Blake, 29, who is making his debut in the tournament, restored his form and tried to stay calm to force a tiebreak in the second set. Leading at 6-1 in the tiebreak, the American converted on the third set point to level the match.
Both players played solid game in the third set, with the Spaniard grabbing the only break point and taking his chance.

Safin, 29, who captured the title in Beijing in 2004, had a much easier time in his second round match, beating an out-of-sorts Gonzalez in only one hour and nine minutes.
The big-serving Safin won 88 percent on his first serve and registered 12 aces to his name compared to just one from the Chilean.

Former world No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic from Croatia continued his quest for an eighth ATP world tour title, hitting 14 aces to beat Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 35minutes.
Ljubicic will next meet either sixth-seeded Swede Robin Soderling or Tommy Robredo of Spain in the last eight.
In WTA tournament, local player Zhang Shuai did not delight her home fans again, losing 6-1, 6-4 to Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, 13th seeded in the elite tournament, in the third round.
Zhang, turning 21 years old and ranked only 226th in the world, recorded career first main draw win while defeating Iveta Benesovain the first round here and by beating Russia’s Dinara Safina in the second round, she became the lowest ranked player eve to defeat a world number one. -
Monfils, Blake, Ivanovic to take part in Brisbane tennis international

Gael Monfils, James Blake and Ana Ivanovic will take part in the Brisbane ATP/WTA International tournament in January ahead of the Australian Open, the organizers said on Thursday.
Frenchman Monfils, ranked 13, will be joined by American Blake, currently ranked No. 24 in the world.
Former French Open champion Ivanovic, of Serbia, is ranked at 11 after reaching the world number one spot in June 2008 following her performance at the Paris Grand Slam tournament.
Other players who have confirmed their participation include Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters.
The Brisbane International will be held from January 3-10, a warm-up for the Australian Open, the first of the yearly four Grand Slam tournmaments in Melbourne.
