Federer defeats Murray to seal year-ending World No.1

Roger Federer came from behind to beat local favorite Andy Murray on Tuesday to make sure that his World No.1 crown will last until the end of the season.

“It means a lot to have returned to No. 1 and to finish the year again at No. 1,” said Federer. “It was an incredible year for me both on the court and off the court and to be able to break the all-time Grand Slam record and finish the year on top is amazing.”
In his second Group A match at the ATP World Tour Finals, Federer lost the first set 6-3 to Murray, who led the head-to-head record in 6-3. However, the Swiss superstar was calm enough to keep his accurate long balls, winning the following set in 6-3.
Murray’s aggression seemed faded in the deciding set, seeing himself lose in 6-1 with half an hour.
With an advantage of 1,3450 points, Federer made sure that he wouldn’t be surpassed by World No.2 Rafael Nadal, who was stunned by Swede World No. 9 Robin Soderling on Monday.
Although four titles this year seemed not amazing enough for Federer, to some extent, he did achieve another peak in his career by claiming victory in the French Open in his 11th attempt and became the sixth man in history to win all four Grand Slam titles.
One month after capturing Roland Garros, Federer won a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, where he collected his sixth crown at the All England Club. -
King Federer feeling on top of the world – again

Roger Federer said finishing the season as world No 1 counted among his greatest-ever achievements in the game, given the dramatic upheaval in his personal life during 2009.

But the Swiss insisted he would still be giving it his all to qualify for the semifinals of the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals tournament.
Federer beat Britain’s Andy Murray 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday at the O2 Arena in southeast London in a victory which ensured Spain’s Rafael Nadal could no longer overtake him as the world No 1 this year.
However, it was not enough to secure his passage to the last four and he may well have to defeat Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro – who beat the Swiss in this year’s US Open final – to bag a semifinal spot.
Finishing the year as No 1 “was one of my big goals for this season”, Federer said.
“And it’s one of the greatest performances I think I’ve achieved. Seeing also what happened off the court: getting married, having twin girls.
“Reaching all four major finals, playing so well at the most important moments, it’s been the key this year and staying healthy.
“Especially after having a rough 2008, coming back this year and being able to dominate and play at the top when the depth in tennis is so, so great at the moment. I think it’s a wonderful achievement. It’s official. It’s a wonderful feeling.”
Now world No 5 Del Potro, who has won one match out of two so far, could stop Federer qualifying for the semis in the third and final round of group stage games.
“He’s definitely in for a shot. It could be a make-or-break match for us to get through. If that’s the case, I’ll give it all I have and try to beat him this time,” the French Open and Wimbledon champion said.
“It seems like he’s playing well. He looks like he’s getting better as the tournament goes on.
“I don’t think the players think too much, are we through or not. So many times we have had the situation that the player needed something and the other thing happened. Matches are always played full on.”
All four players in Group A go into the final round-robin games with a chance of making the semis.
Murray, the world No 4, said he would be going all-out to beat Spain’s Fernando Verdasco, in a bid to get through to the semis.
“I just win against Verdasco. That’s pretty much what I have to do. If I win in straight sets, then, well, a great chance that I go through,” the Scot said.
“Against all the guys in the group I’ve got a good record. If I play well, a good chance I win. If I don’t, then there’s a good chance I lose.
“The only important thing is to try and qualify from the group, whether you win one match, three matches, two matches. Last year I won three, lost in the semis. This year I could potentially lose two matches and win the tournament.
“So you just never know. The match against Verdasco, obviously I’ll try and win.”
Despite taking the first set against Federer, Murray slowly faded in front of the 17,500 capacity crowd.
“The one thing that’s been a problem for me since I came back was I played well-ish first set of the matches. Then when the adrenaline wears off, I don’t know, there’s not quite the same spark in the legs that there was at the start of the year,” Murray said.
“I’ve had letdowns in a lot of matches. I’ve let guys back in the match straightaway, early in the second set.” -
Nadal crashes out, Soderling crushes Djokovic
Posted on 二月 20th, 2010 No commentsNadal crashes out, Soderling crushes Djokovic
Rafael Nadal will not be carrying home any fond memories from his trips to London this year after he became the first player to be knocked out of the ATP World Tour Finals on Wednesday.

Five months after limping out of Wimbledon without defending his title due to aching knees, the Spaniard bore little resemblance to the player who once terrorised his opponents as he slumped to a 6-1 7-6 defeat by Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko.
“I fought a lot. I tried my best all the time but it wasn’t enough to win these matches. That’s it, no?” summed up Nadal, who lost both of his Group B clashes in straight sets.
While Nadal was left to lick his wounds, Swede Robin Soderling became the first qualifier for the semi-finals when he battered world number three Novak Djokovic 7-6 6-1 for his second major shock of the tournament.
Soderling, only competing in the year-end showpiece at London’s O2 Arena after Andy Roddick’s injury-enforced withdrawal, backed up his opening win over Nadal with another magnificent exhibition of power and precision.
It was the kind of display Nadal would have been proud of but instead the Spaniard spent more time shaking his head in frustration than producing winners during a lopsided first set against Davydenko that flashed by in 27 minutes.
Trailing 4-2 in the second set, Nadal appeared to be heading towards one of the worst defeats in his career when a child’s voice boomed out from the darkened arena: “Wake up Rafa, remember you’re the number two in the world.”
Nadal appeared to heed the call and thumped his chest as he twice came from a break down to force Davydenko into a tiebreak, though after a tight battle featuring long rallies, crafty angles and thumping smashes, the Russian managed to seal victory.
Nadal has no chance of progressing any further in the elite eight-man event even if he beats Djokovic in his final round-robin match on Friday.
Djokovic has played almost 100 ATP matches this year and it showed as he appeared to throw in the towel in the second set.
The Serb, winner of the tournament 12 months ago when it was held in Shanghai, barely had enough energy afterwards to answer questions and he will have to pick himself up quickly for his match against Nadal if he is to reach the semis.
“I didn’t enjoy playing today’s match, that’s for sure,” Djokovic, told reporters. “I’m just fatigued from the whole season.
“He absolutely deserved to qualify for the semi-finals. I think he’s the best player so far in the tournament.”
The only surprising thing about the match was that Djokovic managed to drag the first set into a tiebreak, which the Swede sealed with a big first serve.
Soderling won a tremendous baseline exchange to seal the first service break of the match at 1-1 in the second set, splintering Djokovic’s resolve in the process, and raced away with the second set in just 29 minutes.
“There are top nine guys in the world here and I’ve won two matches in straight sets against the number two and three in the world,” Soderling said. -
Xie vows to stand by her man in retirement
Posted on 二月 20th, 2010 No commentsXie vows to stand by her man in retirement
After competing alongside her star boyfriend, Lin Dan, on the badminton court, China’s former women’s singles world No 1 Xie Xingfang has decided to support her sweetheart in another way in retirement – by getting behind him.
“In retirement I want to live a real ordinary life I want to be the woman that cooks soup for Lin,” said the 28-year-old Xie, who officially announced her retirement on Sunday.
“When both of us were athletes, he always took time to watch my matches and made suggestions.
“Now that I am retired, he can focus on his own play.”
On the final day of the China Open on Sunday in Shanghai, the Chinese badminton national team held a farewell ceremony for Xie and women’s doubles player Zhao Tingting, marking the official retirement of the two world champions.
Less than two hours later, Lin beat Jan Jorgensen of Denmark to defend his men’s singles title. That was his fourth title at the tournament, making him the most successful player in the event’s history.
Xie did not compete at the event where she won the women’s singles title in 2004. However, she was in the stands cheering for Lin throughout the tournament.
Xie appears comfortable leaving the game she took up at the age of seven.
“It took a long time for me to make the retirement decision. So when it came, I did not feel emotional.”
She is now looking forward to life after retirement.
“Now Lin Dan’s job is to earn money and I am responsible for spending it,” Xie said.
“I have tried different cuisine while competing around the world and I have always wanted to learn cooking.
“Continuing to study has always been my dream as well and the most important thing is to learn English.
“Lin also wants to learn English but he won’t have much time to study before the London Games. So, I want to learn first and be his interpreter.”
The Xie-Lin romance came to light at the 2004 Thomas Cup when the media caught them kissing.
Since then they have become comfortable with the attention on and off the court. They have appeared courtside at each other’s matches and have posed together for fashion magazines. At the 2007 All-England Open, where both claimed the singles titles, Lin presented Xie with a bunch of roses and a kiss at the awards ceremony.
Lin, the undisputed king of the men’s badminton, said he understood his girlfriend’s decision.
“Now, the most important thing for Xie is to start her second stage of life,” Lin said. “We should give her some time to decide what she wants to do..
“As her teammate and boyfriend I am very happy that there are lots of people to support her. I also hope her fans will support her like before.”
People close to the couple expect to hear wedding bells soon but the pair has declined to comment on that matter.
Although declaring she has no set plans in retirement, Xie, a Guangdong native, has joined the Guangzhou Asian Games organizing committee. She also said she might consider playing in the Chinese Badminton League.
“I have a deep love of sports, so I may continue to support sports in retirement,” Xie said.
Her contribution to badminton was praised by her coach.
“I didn’t want her to retire as she is still such a good player but I can understand her choice as she is about to turn to 30,” said Li Yongbo, head coach of the Chinese national team. “I hope she does well in the future and I will always support her and give her help when she needs it.” -
Soderling haunts Nadal again
Posted on 二月 20th, 2010 No commentsSoderling haunts Nadal again
Swede Robin Soderling returned to haunt Rafael Nadal on Monday with a 6-4 6-4 victory as battle commenced in Group B at the ATP World Tour finals.

Nadal’s already slim chances of knocking Federer off the top of the world rankings now hang by a thread and defeat against Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in the second of his three round-robin matches on Wednesday would almost certainly mean the Spaniard will not reach the semi-finals.
Davydenko was beaten by Serbia’s defending champion Novak Djokovic 3-6 6-4 7-5 in a repeat of last year’s final when the season-ending climax was staged in Shanghai.
Djokovic, the form player arriving at London’s spectacular O2 Arena after three titles in his last four tournaments, finally subdued the jet-heeled Russian after nearly three hours of high-quality action before swapping shirts, soccer style, at the net.
Nadal’s defeat, though, was the talking point of Day Two.
Soderling, who ended Nadal’s 31-match winning streak at the French Open this year and riled him two years ago at Wimbledon, again proved a prickly opponent for the world number two.
Nadal said before the start of the season-ending showpiece that he was not bothered about bridging the 945-point gap between himself and Federer in the rankings.
What will concern him is that right now his shots lack punch and he cannot intimidate opponents the way it once did.
Tendinitis in his knee, an injury which prevented him from defending his Wimbledon crown this year, and the marital problems of his parents, are both mitigating factors but he has not won a title since May and looks strangely vulnerable.
It is all a far cry from the kind of bicep bulging tennis that helped him claim his sixth grand slam title in Australia at the start of the year and left a crestfallen Federer in tears.
Soderling, making his debut at the tournament courtesy of the withdrawal of American Andy Roddick, adopted similar tactics to those he employed to undo Nadal on Parisian clay and was a worthy winner in one hour 38 minutes.
Quite simply he served big and then took every available opportunity to bludgeon his forehand, a stroke that may not be elegant but was once again too hot for Nadal to handle.
“My level right now is not number one, no?” Nadal told reporters. “He is a big player on this surface and if you are not completely calm and playing well in the important moments it’s difficult. I’m not far away from my best level but I need more confidence.”
Another near sell-out crowd gathered inside the vast, dimly-lit 17,500-capacity arena but the Rafa banners, including one held by three young girls asking for his hand in marriage, were rarely waved as he struggled to get on top of an opponent clearly enjoying being part of the razzamatazz.
Soderling angered Nadal at Wimbledon two years ago when he immitated the Spaniard’s habit of tugging at his shorts but he denied any personal grudge against the Mallorcan.
“Sure, it feels better to beat the world number two than the number 200,” the 25-year-old Soderling, who lost to Federer in his maiden grand slam final in Paris in June, told reporters.
“I always enjoy beating good players than lower ranked player but, personally, I have nothing against Rafa. We’ve played a lot of times and we always had good matches.”
It was Soderling’s backhand that allowed him to break Nadal’s opening service game although he did surrender the advantage at 3-1 with a forehand error.
There was a time when unforced errors from the Nadal racket were as rare as British grand slam champions but he offered up two wayward forehands when serving at 4-5 to drop the first set.
Nadal, did break first in the second set thanks to an untimely Soderling double fault but the expected charge did not materialise and Soderling hit back immediately as the Spaniard’s forehand again malfunctioned.
Soderling tightened the screws in the 10th game, eking out a match point that Nadal saved after some tentative play from Soderling. However, he earned another chance with a crunching crosscourt winner and this time Nadal ballooned a backhand over the baseline. -

Federer, Murray win Tour Finals openers

Roger Federer blazed past Fernando Verdasco after an early stumble on Sunday while Andy Murray marked the start of London’s five-year hosting of the ATP Tour Finals with a three-set victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

Swiss maestro Federer, looking to regain the year-end top ranking after being overthrown by Rafael Nadal last year, dug himself out of trouble to win 4-6 7-5 6-1 and join Murray at the top of Group A in the season-ending showpiece.
World number one Federer was top billing for the evening session at the spectacular 02 Arena but lost his opening service game to love and sprayed 15 errors in the first set as Verdasco threatened to cause a shock.
He then survived a crisis at 5-5, 0-30 in the second set, breathing a sigh of relief as the left-handed Verdasco went agonisingly wide with a forehand – a near-miss confirmed by a Hawkeye replay accompanied by thumping heartbeat sound effect, which was just part of the razzmatazz enjoyed by the 17,500 crowd.
Crisis over, 15-times grand slam champion Federer broke serve for the first time in the match in the following game to take the set and then raced away to victory.
“I was down a set, and only the second set was I able to sort of get the ball into play, find my range, find my rhythm,” Federer, a four-times winner of the tournament, told reporters.
“The longer the match went, the more my belief was going up and his was going down.”
Six-times Wimbledon champion Federer said he was impressed with the venue and the lighting, which leaves the crowd in virtual darkness as the players duel on a vivid blue court.
“I thought the crowds were great. The lighting is unique. We don’t really see the crowd and the focus is very much on us. It’s a bit unusual,” he said. “It’s not Wimbledon like, but still special obviously.”
Murray withstood a ferocious comeback by US Open champion Del Potro to claim a 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory that at one stage looked to be slipping away from him.
Del Potro, who lost the first five games, scorched some huge forehand winners but was finally undone by the wily world number four, who soaked up everything the burly Argentine threw at him.
“He didn’t start particularly well but after 5-0 I thought the standard was very good,” Murray, who has won more titles this season than any other player on Tour, told reporters.
“He’s got a big serve, long reach and goes for huge shots. You just have to try and get through it. Tactically I’ve always been fairly good so I found a way through today.”
London’s O2 Arena, formerly known as the Millennium Dome, is more used to welcoming the world’s greatest pop stars, and there was plenty of glitz as the $5 million event got under way with hardly an empty seat in sight.
Led Zeppelin blared out of the sound system and spotlights punctured the eerily-lit arena as Murray and Del Potro walked out to begin the sixth instalment of what many predict will become one of the fiercest rivalries in men’s tennis.
Del Potro, a year younger than the 22-year-old Murray but already one-up on the Scot in the grand slam stakes after his stunning victory over Federer in the Flushing Meadows final in September, arrived at the venue by boat and looked all at sea in the first set in which he was troubled by a nose bleed.
“I have a big nose, that’s the problem,” a glum Del Potro told reporters, although some of his play from 0-5 in the first set should give him confidence that he can still progress.
Things began to change as Del Potro found his timing to claw it back to 3-5 and, although Murray finally clinched the opener on his seventh set point, the tide had turned.
Del Potro broke serve twice in the second set and after softening up Murray with some punishing inside out forehands that Murray could merely slice back defensively he levelled the match with an unstoppable crosscourt effort.
As quickly as it had sparked into life, however, Del Potro’s challenge withered and world number four Murray won the third set surprisingly comfortably after breaking in the second game.
“I could win two matches and still not get to the semi-finals,” said Murray. “But winning the first one obviously helps a lot.”
Group B action opens on Monday when Rafael Nadal, who can still beat Federer to the year-end world number one ranking, faces Swede Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic takes on Nikolay Davydenko. -
Westwood lands Dubai double
Posted on 二月 20th, 2010 No commentsWestwood lands Dubai double
Lee Westwood achieved a European Tour double yesterday by winning the season-ending Dubai World Championship and the European Tour money-list title.
An imperious eight-under-par 64 gave him a final 23-under total of 265 and a runaway six-stroke win over fellow Briton Ross McGowan (68) on the Earth Course.
Westwood’s rival for the Race to Dubai money-list, Rory McIlroy, who shot a 67 yesterday, was third on 273.
Englishman Westwood picked up 1.77 million euros (US$2.37 million) for his double triumph at the Jumeirah Estates.
McIlroy arrived in the United Arab Emirates leading the money-list but the 20-year-old Northern Irishman was eclipsed by Westwood, who started the week in second position.
“The way I played today under this much pressure and the circumstances of it all was about as good as I’ve ever played,” Westwood told reporters after a flawless eight-birdie round.
“It’s easily the biggest moment in my golfing career so far. I knew what I had to do and to go out and shoot 66-64 at the weekend, making no bogeys, gives me a lot of confidence for the future.
“My commiserations go out to Rory.”
A dejected McIlroy said: “Every time I looked up at the leaderboard Lee was making birdies.
“He played unbelievable golf and fair play to him. Lee’s different class and he deserves to be No. 1.”
China’s Liang Wenchong was the highest Asian finisher, firing a final round 70 to finish at 281 for the tournament.
Eye injury
In Miyazaki, Japan, Italy’s Edoardo Molinari beat Robert Karlsson in a playoff to win the Dunlop Phoenix tournament yesterday, denying last year’s European order of merit winner a first victory since an eye injury wrecked his season.
Karlsson, who missed more than four months with career-threatening retinal problems and failed to qualify for the Dubai Championship, led by a stroke halfway through the final round of the US$2.5 million event.
Overnight leader Molinari made up the deficit over the back nine, however, to finish on 13-under and force a playoff which he won to join Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter on the honor roll at the Phoenix Country Club.
Swede Karlsson, 40, will be boosted by his performance in Japan as he heads to Shenzhen, China, this week to defend the World Cup of Golf title with compatriot Henrik Stenson.
Former US Amateur champion Molinari, whose five previous professional wins came on the European Challenge Tour, will again team up with his younger brother Francesco to represent Italy at Mission Hills.
Ireland’s Shane Lowry finished tied for third with Japan’s Hirofumi Miyase at seven-under 277 after both shot 69 in the final round.
