    Major Depression: Major depression is probably one of the most common forms of depression. You probably know a handful of people who suffer from it. The sufferer seems to walk around with the weight of the world on his or her shoulders.     Treatment

    Although major depression can be a devastating illness, it is highly treatable. Many types of treatment are available, and the type chosen depends on the individual and the severity and patterns of his or her illness. There are three well-established types of treatment for depression: medications, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). For some people who have a seasonal component to their depression, light therapy may be useful. These treatments may be used alone or in combination. Additionally, peer education and support can promote recovery. Attention to lifestyle, including diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, can result in better health, including mental health.

    Dysthymia

    Dysthymia is another mood disorder. People who have it may feel mildly depressed on most days over a period of at least two years. They have many symptoms resembling major depression, but with less severity.

    Symptoms of depression may surface with other mood disorders. They include seasonal major depression (also known as seasonal affective disorder), postpartum depression, and bipolar disorder.

    Treatment

    Therapy

    Psychotherapy or cognitive therapy (also known as \”talk therapy\”) is used to alter people’s self-defeating thoughts.

    Behavioral therapy may help people learn how to act in a more \”positive approach\” to life and to communicate better with friends, family, and co-workers.

    Bipolar Disorder

    This condition is characterized by mood that alternates between periods of depression and periods of elation and excitable behavior known as mania (see symptoms below). For people who have bipolar disorder, the depressions can be severe and the mania can seriously impair one\’s normal judgment. When manic, a person is prone towards reckless and inappropriate behavior such as engaging in wild spending sprees or having promiscuous sex. He or she may not be able to realize the harm of his/her behavior and may even lose touch with reality.

    Treatment

    There are some medications which have become famous for this: Zyprexa, Depakote, lithium are all guilty some of the time (not always; it doesn\’t happen to everybody). And now that we\’re paying more attention to this problem, it\’s becoming clear that other medications can do it: all of the new-generation antipsychotics (Zyprexa, Risperidone, Seroquel at least; Geodon very little, aripiprazole more than Geodon but less than the rest) and many of the old-generation medications like Haldol can cause weight gain. Even some antidepressants that were never really suspect in this way are now known to cause weight gain (slower than the medications listed above, though, and perhaps less often), such as Prozac and Paxil.

    Many people turn to medication to help them cope with anxiety and depression. Zoloft is a popular anti-depressant found on the market today and it has had some very positive effects on patients who use it for depression. There are times that I do consider seeking medical advice on whether or not I should take a medication to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression and this medication is appealing, but I do want to consider Zoloft side effects before taking a big step.

    From what I have read, Zoloft is a wonderful medication for many people. I have bouts of insomnia, so Zoloft may really have a negative effect on me.

    Other Zoloft side effects include nausea and diarrhea. That’s depressing in itself. In addition, the medication may interfere with sex drive. This would send my husband into a deep state of depression that no medication could fix. The makers of the anti-depressant also include anxiety and nervousness among the Zoloft side effects. Anxiety is what I’m trying to avoid.

    My depression and anxiety do interfere with my daily routine on occasion. Some days I just want to stay in bed. Many times I have to call off work because I just feel fatigued and overwhelmed. I think that I may not be alone in that. Zoloft side effects would seem small if I were really suffering from anxiety and depression.

    I guess that the best thing for me to do is consult my physician. I can consider Zoloft side effects and discuss it openly with my doctor. Who knows, maybe I’ll find that I just get a little down every once in awhile and I get a little anxious. I may discover that I am quite normal in that. Sometimes we make things out to be worse than they really are.

New pharmaceutical advances have allowed those who suffer from major depression symptoms and other psychological disorders to live a normal life, and not be kept as a prisoner of their symptoms.     At the age of 30, she thought she had dealt with all of her major issues. Though her marriage was somewhat rocky in the beginning, things were really starting to smooth out. Her career was stable and her two kids were growing up healthy and happy. But something was wrong.

    She found herself to be very tired all the time. The alarm seemed to go off too early in the morning, no matter how much sleep she got. Her appetite was out of whack, and she definitely was relying too heavily on alcohol. Though normally a very smart dresser, she had started to let herself go in the past few months. She\’d gained some weight and she hadn\’t bothered to get a haircut. She felt like she was dragging herself through life and nothing held the appeal that it once had.

    One afternoon, she and her husband got into an argument. She was on her way out to the spa – a special treat to try to pull herself out of the constant fog that she\’d been feeling.     Anxiety and depression are by far the two most common mental illnesses diagnosed in the United States, and probably the world, although there haven’t been studies done to confirm it. They both can be debilitating in their effects, and are very difficult disorders to live with. Unfortunately, most people with anxiety and depression do just that; live with it. Most studies done of the diseases show that more than 75% of people who are clinically depressed go without treatment, as well as over 90% of people with anxiety disorders.

    This is especially disturbing, since both anxiety and depression are the most treatable forms of mental illnesses there are. There are a variety of medications that are available today to treat both anxiety and depression, and there are a lot of helpful resources out there that can help find the road to recovery from your symptoms.

    The two diseases are not fully understood, but are definitely related in some key ways. People suffering from anxiety disorders are many times more likely to also suffer from depression than someone without an anxiety condition. The same is true with people suffering from depression, in that they are more likely to also have an anxiety disorder. It is not surprising then that many of the anxiety and depression treatments are similar or even exactly the same.

    Traditionally, anxiety disorders have been treated with the use of sedatives. The first and most famous sedative used to treat anxiety is alcohol. Due to its toxic effects and highly addictive nature, barbiturates quickly replaced alcohol as a treatment for anxiety after their introduction to the medical world in 1912. Of course, it was soon realized that barbiturates suffer from many of the same drawbacks as alcohol, and today benzodiazapines have all but completely replaced barbiturates in anxiety treatment.

    While benzodiazapines are effective in treating anxiety, they too are highly addictive chemicals, and can actually make the symptoms of depression worse. So if you are worried about addiction, or are suffering from both anxiety and depression, you should avoid using sedatives of any kind to treat your symptoms.

    There are likewise some drugs that are good for treating certain forms of depression, but will actually worsen an anxiety disorder. Norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors, such as Wellbutrin, have been shown effective in the treatment of depression, but are not recommended if you also suffer from anxiety.

    The SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are medications that are effective in treating both anxiety and depression. Support groups, therapy, counseling, exercise, and a healthy diet, are all non-pharmaceutical ways of treating both disorders. If you suspect that you suffer from anxiety and depression, or either one, you should see a doctor. Both disorders are highly treatable, but will likely only get worse without taking steps to recover.

    You’d think Aristotle and Sophocles bandied the question about, it has been such a plaguing question, one that has been asked for decades, for centuries, even: what is the cure for depression? A consideration of the symptoms, the causes, and the studies to find that all elusive cure for depression might at least set your mind at ease enough to realize you are not alone. A couple of examples might help to realize the search for a cure for depression is an insidious struggle, a desperate measure, a do-or-die imperative shared by millions.

    According to US News (2006) online, approximately 18.8 million people suffer with depression. They don’t feel like eating, socializing or sleeping. They sleep too much. They have feelings of doom, of loneliness, of alienation. They feel worthless or consumed by strange guilt for nothing they have done wrong. They feel wiped out, exhausted, weak. They carry a truckload of trucks on their souls. Simple things are impossible, important events are meaningless.

    In seeking a cure for their depression, they might find the information first reveals that each cause or set of causes calls for different treatment or treatments. The cause can be genetic, biological, psychological, can be clinical or conditional. I was depressed from an early age. One of the first articles I read on cures for depression noted that depression is anger turned inward. Though this didn’t help much, as I was still not able to or allowed to express whatever anger was roiling away, it did set me on a path to find out what depression was trying to tell those of us who carried it on our shoulders 24/7. For some of us, the depression is conditional, based on a traumatic incident that we never got liberated from. For others, it comes with the family package of tics, mania, or other mental disorders and illnesses. For many others it is caused by a chemical imbalance, a broken or missing wire in the network that is the brain.

    So the cure for depression, then, becomes as complex or as simple as the causes and effects are or are not. Medications, the first answers, are not always such a bad (knee-jerk) solution. For those of us with chemical imbalances, the evening-out by a reuptake inhibitor is a dream come true. (SRIs draw the serotonin levels up into pools in the brain—around the hypothalamus, etc., and trap the pools there, so the moods do not plunge but stay even.) For others of us therapy (with an MFT, a psychologist, a psychiatrist) will work to help us adjust, adapt, even accommodate. My therapist, for example, taught me that to fight it was to invite it to come on even stronger, so I learned to accept it and go with it, climbing into bed surrounding by my favorite things, wallowing in, really. (I took many “mental health” days off from work when there was no such thing, save “sick” days, so I had to call it something the non-depressed would accept—and pay for, if I had sick time coming to me—flu, allergies, etc..)

    Still others opt for exercise, meditation, visualization, aromatherapy, changing food plans/diets, and more. I had tried all of these. Zip.

    My mother was severely depressed all the years we were growing up. I carried on the tradition, feeling chronically, clinically depressed and seeking a cure for my depression for over twenty-five years. I was, oddly enough, one of the “lucky” ones: my depression was partner to an equally common disorder called Attention Deficit Disorder. So though I was at first treated only for the cure for depression alone, with Prozac, which saved me from offing myself but added a hundred pounds to my already hefty frame, I was eventually (in my early forties) treated for ADD with medication that took away the depression for the most part. Some days I can hear it coming, can feel in my gut the angst churning and brewing, but can embrace it for what it is, climb in bed with books and toys and whatever other comfort items I choose, and ride that bitch of a malady out. For it does pass. And as to a “cure” for depression, I still say really good drugs help.

    Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list below) that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Some people have a single episode of depression, but many have episodes that recur.

    Dysthymia is a less severe type of depression that lasts a long time but involves less severe symptoms. If you suffer from dysthymia you probalby lead a normal life, but you may not be functioning well or feeling good. People with dysthymia may also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives.

    Bipolar Disorder (also called manic-depression) is another type of depressive disorder. Bipolar disorder is thought to be less common than other depressive disorders. If you have bipolar disorder you are troubled by cycling mood swings – usually severe highs (mania) and lows (depression). The mood swings are sometimes dramatic and rapid, but usually are more gradual. When in the depressed stage, a person can have any or all of the symptoms of a depressive disorder.

    Herbal Tonics

    A combination of herbs is usually more effective and preferred for treatment of depression. The tonics are prepared with special consideration to neutralizing the side effects caused by one and with consideration to the specific situation of the individual who is taking it. Since the herbs may interact with prescription medicines, make sure you check with your doctor before starting on any herb if you are currently taking any prescription medications.

    Ingredients: Vitex, black cohosh, wild yam root, licorice, sarsaparilla, false unicorn root, red raspberry leaf, dong quai, motherwort, royal jelly, squaw vine, maca, suma, oatstraw, fo-ti, cooked rehmannia, siberian ginseng, damiana, ligusticum wallichi, muirapuama, fructus lycii.

    Kava Blend: Mix equal parts of kava, lemon balm, valerian root and St. John\’s wort. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 tsp. of herb mix. Drink 1 cup three times daily, one hour after meals.

    Chinese Herbs: Bupleurum and dong quai make up a Chinese herbal formula that helps reduce anxiety, irritability, and depression. Take 1,000 milligrams of a bupleurum and dong quai combination formula two or three times daily for two weeks out of every month (if you are a woman, take it for the two weeks prior to the anticipated onset of your menstrual period).

    Gentian Root Tea: Steep 1/2 ounce each of finely chopped poplar bark and gentian root in two pints of water for fifteen minutes. Boil and add 1/2ounce each of agrimony and centaury. Simmer for ten minutes, cool, and strain. You can add honey for sweetener if you desire. Take three or four tablespoons before meals.
